Driving The Hudson Valley
Metro-North and Amtrak run along the east bank, so Beacon, Cold Spring, Poughkeepsie, Rhinecliff and Hudson are easy to reach and everything else is not. The venues people actually book — barns off Route 9G, inns above New Paltz, farms in Ancram — are fifteen to thirty minutes inland from the nearest platform, on roads with no cell service and no cars for hire.
We cross the river at the Bear Mountain, Newburgh-Beacon, Mid-Hudson, Kingston-Rhinecliff and Rip Van Winkle bridges depending on which bank your pickup and drop are on, and the toll is inside the flat rate.
Winter matters here. Route 44/55 up the Shawangunk ridge, the Taconic north of Millbrook, and the mountain roads to Hunter and Windham all ice before the highways do, so we move ski and holiday pickups earlier rather than arriving late.
